New Brockton, Alabama – A heartbreaking incident occurred on February 22, 2025, when 21-year-old Byron Ja’Kee Burkes of Elba, Alabama, tragically drowned after a fishing boat capsized in a pond off Alabama Highway 84.
Byron, along with a friend, was fishing when their boat overturned around 5:00 p.m. One of the men was able to cling to the boat and was rescued by emergency responders. Unfortunately, Byron was unable to survive the cold waters and drowned.
First responders from New Brockton Fire Department, Enterprise Rescue, and additional agencies braved frigid conditions to rescue the survivor. After an intense recovery effort, Byron’s body was found and recovered approximately two hours later, around 7:30 p.m. The cause of death is currently under investigation by authorities, with the remains sent for autopsy.
Arnold Woodham, Coffee County Coroner, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “This was an incredibly traumatic event, not only for the family but also for the first responders who put their lives at risk to assist in this rescue.”
Community members expressed condolences online. Diane Tindol McClurg wrote, "Prayers for the family of Mr. Burkes…," while Shawn Cope shared, "So heartbreaking to hear of the passing of this young man."
The family, along with all those impacted by this loss, remains in the thoughts of the community during this incredibly difficult time.
